Defining Relative Clause (hai, hai peri, hai peri sin)

In general, you can make a relative clause by adding hai 'that, which is/does...' after the noun that is directly involved in the situation.

L'ai 3SG-∈	gina woman	hai ʀᴇʟ	poietosa create	ana into	biblia book	he The Dispossessed. The Dispossessed
'She is the woman who wrote a book called The Dispossessed.'

Los'ai 3PL-∈	magirose cook-ᴄᴏɴs	iktia fish	hai ʀᴇʟ	harpita captured thing	von ᴀɢᴛ	tauta the same	losa 3PL
'They cooked the fish that they had caught.'

We use he to make relative clause about the time and place of the event described by the subordinate clause.

Me'ai 1SG-∈	nautosa drive	pros to	agora market	he ʀᴇʟ-ʟᴏᴄ	mo my	patr'ai father-∈	opsonosa buy.
'I'm going to the market where my father is shopping.'

Hodi'ai today-∈	hemera day	he ʀᴇʟ-ᴛᴇᴍ	mo my	patr'ai father-∈	opsonosa buy	ende inside	agora market
'Today is the day when my father goes shopping at the market.'

Alias/Synonyms & Non-defining Relative Clauses (aka & aka hai)

We use aka hai to make non-defining relative clauses. This is an additional information that does not further specify the identity of the referred object, but merely gives a description about its general category.

M'ai 1SG-∈	filose like-ᴄᴏɴs	felina cat	aka i.e.	hai ʀᴇʟ	mamalia mammal.
'I like cats, which are a type of mammals.'

We can just say aka if the relative clause is an alias, a synonym, or a comparable equivalent to the head noun phrase.

S'ai this-∈	nosokomia hospital	aka i.e.	oeka house	hai peri ʀᴇʟ-ʟᴏᴄ	multa many	patos'ai sick-people-∈	ontos' exist.
'This is a hospital, which is a building where there's a lot of sick people.'

Omo raw	bromata food	aka i.e.	non not	magirit'ai cooked-∈	riposa dirty.
'Raw food, i.e. things that are not cooked, are dirty.'

Names and Foreign Words (he & al)

We use hei to mark the names of persons and specific objects. We can think of it like honorifics, like 'mr' or 'ms'. We use al to mark foreign words and foreign object types or categories.

'They went diving in the Pacific ocean.'

Hei ʜᴏɴ	Gino D'Acampo (person's name)	ai ∈	magirose cook-	al- ʜᴏɴ	Limoncetti (Italian food term)
'Mr. Gino D'Acampo is making some limoncetti.'
